Japan Airlines, together with its subsidiaries, provides scheduled and non-scheduled air transport services in Japan, Asia, Oceania, North America, and Europe. The company operates through Air Transportation and Other segments.
Japan Airlines is the biggest airline in Japan, although with fierce competition from ANA it's not a commanding lead. JAL and ANA are in fierce competition with each other, often quickly duplicating any promotions and perks, and this extends to shareholder benefits which are very similar.
End of March, end of September
Airplane ticket and tour package discounts
This one is annoying because the March and September benefits have separate requirements.
Tour package discounts (2-7% off):
100 shares gives you 2 tickets each for domestic and international tours for the March rights date.
200 shares gives you 2 tickets each for domestic and international tours for both the March and September rights date.
50% off airplane discount coupons (Flex type B):
March rights date:
100 shares - 1 coupon
300 shares - 2 coupons
500 shares - 3 coupons
700 shares - 4 coupons
900 shares - 5 coupons
1,100 shares - 5 coupons, plus one coupon per 500 shares over
100,000 shares - 203 coupons plus one extra coupon per 1000 shares over
September rights date:
200 shares - 1 coupon
400 shares - 2 coupons
600 shares - 3 coupons
800 shares - 4 coupons
1,000 shares - 5 coupons
1,100 shares - 5 coupons, plus one coupon per 500 shares over
100,000 shares - 203 coupons plus one extra coupon per 1000 shares over
Although getting 50% off the plane ticket seems like a great deal, in reality these discounts aren't as good as you might think. Type B Flex tickets are pretty expensive to begin with, so any kind of non-refundable ticket booked in advance will be cheaper compared to using the coupon. The coupons can be useful if you need to go somewhere on short notice and no cheap tickets are available, but otherwise you're better off just booking a different fare class. JAL tours are probably going to be more expensive than booking things yourself or using an online travel agent.
When compared to ANA, you essentially need double the shares to make parity with benefits until you get to the high numbers.
COVID hit the stock hard, but it seems like things are recovering well!
